A journey to Latvia is a encounter with Thor. Turaida, meaning ‘the garden of Thor’ in Livonian, bears significance akin to English Thursday, dedicated to Thor. The castle of the garden of Thor has endured since ancient times on the banks of the Gauja river, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt.
On one side of the river, the Gutmanis cave shelters a spring believed to halt aging. On the opposite bank lies the tomb of the Rose of Turaida, a lover whose tragic tale has spawned legends.
Today, young couples converge here to pledge their vows. Behind the stele, a three-hundred-year-old lime tree stands sentinel. A hand has been laid there.
